Abstract

148,635. Merton, G. April 29, 1919. Clinometers; horizons, artificial. - Relates to means for obtaining a fiduciary horizontal plane in sighting clinometers or other instruments for measuring angles relatively to the horizontal. The instrument comprises a sighting - telescope 1 to which is attached a handle .5 and a scale-plate 3 on which is pivoted an indicator 9 carrying a vernier 10. Mounted on the indicator 9 is a tube 22 containing mercury 23 and projecting into this tube are contacts 25, 26, 27 the contact 25 being adjustable, in the arrangement shown, by the screw 32. These contacts are arranged in the circuits of lamps 49, 50 arranged to project their light into the telescope 1, the arrangement being such that when the tube 22 is level both circuits are open or both closed but when the tube becomes inclined only one of the circuits is closed. The current for the lamps may be supplied by a battery within the handle 5. The indicator 9 can be clamped by a screw 11, a screw 20 being provided for fine adjustment. A second tube similar to the tube 22 but at right-angles to it may be provided to enable the observer to hold the instrument in a vertical plane. The levelling-device may also be applied to other instruments requiring to be maintained in the horizontal position, the contacts being in such cases connected to suitable controlling-means.
