Abstract

331,857. Hardinge, F. R. April 9, 1929. Clinometers. - A clinometer for aircraft &c. comprises a pendulum connected to an indicator and a fixed circular magnet or arrangement of magnets so disposed that a uniform field acts on an armature fixed in relation to the pendulum in order to prevent oscillations of the pendulum. In the form shown the pendulum a is secured to a spindle b mounted in bearings in a casing d and connected by gearing i, j to a spindle k carrying a pointer l. The circular magnet e secured in the casing acts on an armature f comprising a steel ring carried by an aluminium &c. disc g secured to the spindle b, the ring being on the face of the disc remote from the magnet. Adjustable screws &c. h passing through the armature and disc and making wiping contact with the magnet enable the pull on the armature to be varied. In another form the pointer is mounted directly on the spindle b. To indicate the fore- and aft and lateral tilt of an aircraft two pendulum devices are used with the pendulum spindles at right-angles to each other. In one instrument the pendulum is geared to the pointer and in the other it operates it directly so that the two pointers rotate about parallel axes and the dials can be disposed one below the other in the same face of a casing common to both instruments.
