Abstract

575,055. Centrifugal pumps. DRYSDALE & CO., Ltd., and DRYSDALE, J. W. W. Feb. 23,1944, No. 3412. [Class 110 (i)] A self-priming centrifugal pump comprises at least one impeller 2 on a horizontal shaft 3 in a casing 1 which is divided in a plane substantially containing the shaft, the upper part of the casing providing a suction chamber 5 and a cooling-water chamber 9 accommodating an air-pump 10 driven from the shaft 3 ; in the arrangement shown the air-pump 10 is of the water-ring type, and its shaft 13 is connected to the shaft 3 by chain and sprocket gearing 15, 17. The cooling-water chamber constitutes a self-contained circulation for the air-pump 10, the water being cooled by the intake liquid of the pump 2 in the chamber 5. The suction of the air-pump 10 is connected to the upper part of the chamber 5 through a float-operated valve 25 which closes when the chamber 5 fills with liquid.
