574,876. Ammunition cartridges. SHUFFLEBOTHAM, J. S., WILLIAMS, R. G., JEFFERIS, M. R., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 11, 1942, No. 16977. [Class 9 (i)] A cartridge adapted especially for use with a tubular - tailed projectile fired from a spigot or like mortar, is formed of metal in two cup-shaped portions, a head 1 and a cover 2, having a friction fit, and the head is made of metal sufficiently soft to expand readily to the internal diameter of the tube of the projectile or barrel of the projector, to form a gas seal. The cover may be internally shouldered at 8 to form an abutment for the rim of the head, or a distance sleeve may be placed in the cover and the, parts may be frictionally held together by an internal or external sleeve coacting with the head and the cover. The percussion cap 3 is secured to the head portion and the end 3a of the percussion cap is enlarged to form a holding means for wads 4 and a wad cover 5. Charge-density regulating wads 6 may be inserted in the cover.
