Abstract
891,063. Grenades. LOSFELD, A., and ROUSTANT, M. April 29, 1960 [Nov. 29, 1959; March 25, 1960], No. 15173/60. Class 9(1). A hand grenade, which may also be fired from a gun by means of a detachable tail, comprises an explosive mass 2, which may have a thin metal sheath. An axial passage through the explosive houses a detonator 7 and leads from a threaded base recess to the bottom of a chamber housing an igniter. The chamber is lined by a continuation of a metal sleeve 3 placed on the upper end of the grenade and having inwardly stamped-out lugs 5, which engage in a helicoidal groove 9 of a thick steel casing 14 placed over the explosive 2. Over the igniter a knurled cap 6 is secured by a bayonet joint. The grenade may be thrown without the casing 14, the cap 6 being first removed. The igniter may be provided with a percussion or a delay fuze. To fire the grenade from a gun a tail 11, Fig. 4, of duralumin is screwed into the base through an opening in the casing 14. A ring 12 attached to the tail is equipped with fins, which may be made from bent-up arcuate segments, Fig. 5, of which the webs are soldered or riveted in position. A triangular tip of each fin may be bent out of the radial plane in which the fin lies. At the forward end of tube 11, a safety member 11b may be provided. This member is of thick steel and has a threaded stem 10a for attachment to the grenade. The member 11 b is screwed on the tail in such a way that a gap exists between the launching tube 13 and the inner end surface of the member. A blind hole 17 covered by a washer 18 is provided, so that if a bulleted cartridge is inserted accidentally in the gun, the bullet is flattened and cannot fire the detonator.
