573,987. Measuring thrust. ELMOTT, A. G. March 31, 1943, No. 5193. [Class 106 (ii)] Apparatus for indicating or measuring thrust in a propeller shaft such as are used on multiengined aircraft or marine vessels, comprises a device known under the Registered Trade Mark " Statimeter." This device comprises a rubber annular vessel 22 squeezed, when the shaft develops thrust, between two ehannelshaped rings 19, 20 connected respectively to a roller bearing 16 and to a ball-thrust bearing unit 12. The vessel 22 communicates with a high-pressure vessel 27, the diaphragm 28 of which is connected to the diaphragm 35 of a low-pressure vessel 34 connected to a Bourdon tube 40, which indicates on a scale the thrust of the shaft. If engine-trouble occurs, the thrust ceases and the tail of a gear sector 43 allows the spring contacts 50 to close, relay 49 energizes to close contacts 48 and a warning lamp 47 is lighted. The vessels 27, 34 may be mounted on the power unit, the pressure gauge on the power unit or in the pilot's cockpit.
