Abstract

The invention relates to aircraft rocket propelled ejection seats and particularly to an apparatus for determining airmen weight moment values (i.e. the moment of any given airman about an arbitary transverse axis) comprising a base structure 1 (Figs. 1, 2) and a test seat 10 mounted thereon rockable about a transverse axis (shaft 9) displaced from the vertical plane containing the centre of gravity of the seat when occupied by an airman, and means for measuring the pitching moment of the seat about such axis in units that may be so applied to the calibration of the rocket motor thrust-line-position adjusting means of an aircraft ejection seat so as to enable the pitching moment value measured for a given airman to be employed for correct setting of rocket motor thrust line position in such an aircraft ejection seat for use by that airman. The pitching moment measured is related to the airman weight moment. The measuring means may comprise a cylinder 21 fixed to the base structure and having a piston 22 projecting upwardly therefrom, the piston having a central stud 24 for engagement by a pressure finger 23 rigidly secured to the underside of seat 10. When seat moves forward the finger 23 depresses the piston 22 and this causes displacement of hydraulic fluid from the cylinder through tube 25 to a fluid pressure sensitive indicating device 27 calibrated in terms of airman weight moments. Alternatively the seat may carry a balance beam along which a balance weight may be moved to achieve equilibrium. Further alternative measuring means may be electrical in character and may comprise e.g. a strain gauge or carbon pile and associated circuitry and indicators or a potentiometer producing electrical signals in dependence on the movement of the seat.
