Abstract

1518359 Measuring force electrically STRAINSTALL Ltd 2 Feb 1977 [14 Feb 1976] 05883/76 Heading G1N The stresses produced in a rail track are measured by a strain gauge transducer comprising a hollow cylindrical body 6 Fig. 4 secured in a transverse hole in the rail, carrying four strain gauge resistors G1-G4 disposed symmetrically on the inside surface of the body 6. With the strain gauges at 45 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the rail, as shown, they measure the shear stress corresponding to the weight of a vehicle on the rail. Alternatively the strain gauges may be located along the perpendicular to the axis of the rail when they measure the tensile or compressive stress in the rail, due e.g. to ambient temperature conditions.
