851,921. Indicating loss of thrust in jet engines. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Feb. 20, 1959 [Feb. 21, 1958], No. 5792/58. Classes 106 (2) and 106 (4). A device for indicating loss of thrust or power in a gas turbine engine particularly for aircraft comprises a pressure-responsive device 10, including pressure indicating means 11, means for supplying jet pipe total head pressure to the device 10 and a datum 24, whereby juxtaposition of the indicator 11 and the datum 24 during take-off, indicates a predetermined percentage loss of thrust. To determine when a serious loss of power has taken place in the engine, a pitot head situated at the downstream end of the jet pipe is connected to a pressure gauge 10. The dial 13 of this gauge is graduated in terms of ambient temperature and a rotatable transparent plate 16 is also provided. This latter is graduated in terms of ambient pressure and has the datum line 24 marked on it. In use, the plate 16 is turned by means of a knob 19 until the graduation corresponding to the ambient pressure is set against the graduation on the dial 13 corresponding to the prevailing ambient temperature. It is stated that if the pointer 11 of the gauge falls below the datum 24, then a 25% loss of thrust has taken place. The device is intended for use during take-off and one may be provided for each engine. The temperature and pressure scales may be interchanged.
