Abstract
573,162. Securing wheels on shafts. HUMBER,. Ltd., and TWYNEHAM, R. J. Aug. 7, 1943, No. 12779. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXV and XXXIV] A wheel 16 is locked' on a shaft 12 by an abutment member 15 of U-shape engaging a groove 14 in the shaft, the member 15 taking the reactive force of a nut 18 when the latter is screwed about the wheel hub 17 to force the latter against a fixed abutment 23 on the shaft. As shown, the abutment 23 is part of a brake drum 13 fixed to the shaft 12. The member 15 has notches 21, 22, which engage bent portions of springs 20 on the nut 18 to hold the member 15 in its disengaged and engaged positions respectively. The driving torque is transmitted between the shaft 12 and wheel 16 by pins 25. Upon release of the nut 18, the abutment member 15 may be removed from the groove 14, whereupon the wheel 16 together with the nut 18 can be slid off the shaft 12. In a modification for a steering wheel, the member 15 is pivoted to the nut member and is urged towards its locking position by a compression spring.
