Abstract

571,388. Rotary cutters. CARSTENS, E. Jan. 6, 1944, No. 284. [Class 145 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A tool for working relatively soft materials such as light metals or wood, comprises four cutting edges 3 extending parallel to the axis of rotation of the tool and having outer surfaces 6 lying on a common cylindrical surface 7, the head of the tool being adjustably and eccentrically secured to a shaft 1 so that the axis of rotation of the tool is located within the said cylindrical surface. The shaft is formed with an eccentric journal 2 on which the cutter head is mounted by means of a nut 5 and is drilled to receive counterbalance plugs 9 (not shown). The cutting angle may be adjusted by turning the head relatively to the shaft and the bore of the head may be made large enough to allow of radial adjustment of the head. Such adjustment may be facilitated by the insertion of a socket with an eccentric bore between the head and the journal 2.
