Abstract
474,599. Reamers, taps, and milling- cutters. STAPLES, E. M. Jan. 29, 1936, No. 2689. [Class 83 (iii)] A reamer, tap, milling-cutter, or like circular cutting tool comprises a cylindrical body portion with longitudinal cutting elements on its outer surface and means for expanding said body portion arranged within a cavity thereof, said means being adapted to contact with the inside of the body portion along narrow areas or lines substantially parallel with the forward edges of the cutting elements and so disposed as to outwardly expand the body adjacent to the cutting elements to impart simultaneously clearance to the cutting elements. In a reamer, Figs. 3 and 4, a tapered polygonal plug 29, the edges of which contact the cylindrical interior 23 of the hollow portion of the body, is driven into the body to adjust the cutting blades 20. The hollow portion carrying the cutting blades tends to conform to the tapered plug and so the cutting blades are tilted in the direction to impart clearance to them. The tapered plug may be held and adjusted by various screw means. In a modification the interior of the body may be polygonal and the tapered plug may be plain, and in a further modification, Fig. 7, projections 36 on the interior of the body may engage cam surfaces 35 on a rotatably adjustable plug 29, graduations being provided to facilitate adjustment. Any of the expanding means described as applied to reamers may be used for adjustable taps. A milling-cutter embodiment of the invention, Fig. 14, comprises an interiorly fluted body portion 21, the points of least diameter of the interior being directly under the cutting edges of the blades 20 and adapted to be engaged by a conical plug 30 screwed to a hub 29 integral with an end flange 38. The latter is adjusted relatively to the body portion to expand the - cutter and locked by a key-piece (not shown) which is adapted to break on overload. A screwed disc 40 makes up the other side face of the cutter and locks the conical piece 30 on the hub 29.
