Abstract

533,144. Milling-cutters; tools and toolholders &c. WICKMAN, Ltd., A. C. (Johnson, A.). Nov. 27, 1939, No 30886. [Class 83 (iii)] An inserted blade cutting-tool such as a milling-cutter or lathe tool comprises a body having one or more plane-sided slots 11 which converge outwardly in a transverse plane (Fig. 1) and also converge away from the end of the tool (Fig. 2), each slot being fitted with a conforming blade and wedge assembly which are locked together by interfitting serrations 27, 28 arranged on part only of the contiguous surfaces 21, 25. The blade is of uniform tapered cross section, Fig. 1, has end and side cutting-edges 22, 23 respectively, and preferably fitted with a hardened insert of cemented carbide material. The wedge is of tapered cross section and has also a longitudinal taper as shown in Fig. 2. The serrations between the blade and wedge members are arranged only on those parts of said members which lie away from the cutting-edges. The serrations on the wedge are raised from the level of the surface 25 while those of the blades are depressed from the co-acting surface 21 (Fig. 8) so that there is always contact between the surfaces 21, 25. In a modification the bottom 18 of the blade slot is inclined to the cutter axis, the inner surface of the wedge and blade being correspondingly inclined so that a longitudinal adjustment of the blade also provides a radial adjustment. In another modification, Fig. 5, the invention is applied to a hollow cutter head having inwardly directed cutters 36. A further modification comprises a rotary slotting tool with blades projecting alternately in opposite directions from the tool body. Specifications 396,491 and 533,268 are referred to.
