705,452. Reaming. MARTEN, V. C. E. GWILLIAM-. Jan. 2, 1953 [Jan. 26, 1952], No. 2181/52. Class 83. (3). [Also in Group XXIII] A portable machine for reboring automobile cylinders comprises an adjustable or expanding tool 1, the guide-shank of which works in a bracket having a surfaceplate 32 to contact the cylinder block 5 and containing means whereby a combined rotary and reciprocating motion may be imparted to the tool. The blades 1 may have a toothed or undulating cutting edge, Figs. 4 and 6. Springs 18 and collars 20 maintain the blades in contact with an . adjusting mandrel 9, the final diameter of the blades being determined by a screw 26. The tool is reciprocated and rotated by manually-rotated gearing 8, 25, the gear 25 carrying a sliding, ball-headed connecting pin 24 engaging a socket in an extension of the tool-shank 4. The driving means may incorporate a torque-indicating device or a flywheel. The pin 24 may be replaced by a stud or roller engaging an oblique groove in the shank or by a Scotch .Yoke mechanism. Swarf may be removed by a jet of air or water applied through a ;connection 41.
