[Class 83 (iii)] In a floating, expanding reamer two cutters D and E, positively controlled in both directions, are slidably mounted in a transverse bore C of a body A having a tapered shank B. The inner end of each cutter is tapped to receive oppositely threaded shanks K and L which are formed integral on either side of a pinion M. A second bore N in the body is at an angle with bore C which is less than a right angle by an amount depending on the helix angle of a worm O fitted within this bore. The worm adjusts the cutters through the pinion and has formed integral with it, at one end, a micrometer disc having a slot for rotating the worm by a key. The worm is secured by a screw threaded into the opposite end. The cutters have flats F against which an insert Q, secured to the body by screws, bears, to prevent rotation of the cutters. A shallow slot U in the insert limits the float of the pinion and cutters. In a modification, the pinion, Fig. 12, has conical surfaces D<1> and the insert has two screws C', C<2> set at an angle so that their ends bear against the conical surfaces of the pinion and means are provided thereby for varying the amount of "float." For use with boring- bars a third bore 7, Fig. 10, is parallel with and opens into, the cutter housing and a pin Z having flats Z<1> to prevent cutter rotation, is fitted therein. A slot A<1> on the pin limits the float of pinion and cutters whilst the pin is secured by a screw fitted transversely to the axis of the pin.
