793,078. Reamers. ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION, Ltd. Oct. 30, 1956 [March 5, 1956], No. 6787/56. Class 83 (3). An adjustable, floating-blade reamer comprises a pair of blades 5 in a slot 4 in the end of a body 1, having projections 14 in a slot 12 in a spigot 11 which is in tongue-and-slot, (10, 9), engagement with a driver 8, the spigot being of smaller diameter than the bore 6 of the body to provide the float and the driver having a helical-groove 16 in its periphery to receive a ball 18 guided in a lengthwise slot 17 in the body, and means 20, 21 for adjusting the ball along the slot 17. Conical-surfaces 22 on the opposed-ends of sleeves 20, 21, engaging screw-threads on the body 1, bear against the projecting ball 18 to clamp or adjust the ball in the slot 17. Adjustment of the ball along the slot 17 rotates the driver 8 and the spigot 11, thus reducing or, as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 10, increasing the diameter of the cutting-edges from the setting of Fig. 9, by changing the angle of the slot 12 and moving the projections in opposite directions. Either or both sleeves 20, 21 may indicate their setting, as by graduations 27, and are formed with a spigot 25 and a recess 24 to enclose the ball 18. The projections 14 have shanks 13 located in plain bores in the blades, which are retained in the slot by a plate 15. The projections, spigot 11, driver 8 and the ball may be hardened.
