Abstract

558,409. Milling-cutters. STEWART, R. C. Dec. 4, 1942, No. 17243. [Class 83 (iii)] A rotary milling cutter comprises a holder a fitted with tools d arranged at progressively varying distances from the cutter axis and at oppositely varying distances from a datum plane perpendicular to the cutter axis so that tools located at the greatest distance from the axis cut at the least depth, the plane of the cutter face being so inclined that the tools are uniformly supported. In one form the cutter has two groups of tools, arranged round a circle eccentric to the central bore b by which the cutter is mounted the group 2, 4, 6, 8 being at increasing radial distances from the cutter axis but decreasing distances from the datum plane. The second group 7, 5, 3 are at decreasing radii but increasing datum distances. The cutter 1 is a finishing tool cutting at slightly greater depth than the cutter 2. An example of actual dimensions is given in the Specification. The front face of the cutter is inclined as shown so that the tools protrude approximately equal distances from the cutter face. In a modification 36 tools are arranged in a similar manner in two groups. In some cases the tools may be arranged in a single group with equal differences of radial and datum measurements. The cutter body may be dynamically balanced.
