Abstract
Copolymers are prepared by copolymerizing in aqueous emulsion a diene compound and an alkyl di-ester of mono-chloromaleic acid containing at least one chloroalkyl radical having from 2 to 5 carbon atoms. The chloroalkyl radical may be 2-chloroethyl-, 3-chloropropyl-, 3-chloroisopropyl-, 4-chlorobutyl-, 3-chloroisobutyl-, 5-chloroamyl-, 1-chloromethyl propyl-, 1 - chloromethyl butyl or 1 - chloromethyl - 2 - chloro-ethyl. Mixed di-esters containing one chloroalkyl radical one alkyl radical may also be used. The diene compound may be butadiene-1,3, 2-chlorobutadiene-1,3, 2-cyanobutadiene - 1,3, isoprene, 2 - methylpentadiene - 1,3 or 2,3 - dimethylbutadiene - 1,3. The emulsion may comprise a buffering agent, e.g. citric acid and a sodium dihydrogen phosphate, a wetting agent, e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate and Vultamol, a catalyst, e.g. sodium perborate, sodium cyanide and acetaldehyde. The product is a white powder which when hot-milled with plasticizers such as dibutyl phthalate may be used for moulding and coating compositions. Di-(b -chloromethyl) monochloromaleate is made by refluxing a solution containing chloromaleic anhydride, ethylene chlorohydrin, benzene and concentrated sulphuric acid until the theoretical amount of water has separated. It had the following properties: B.P. 175-180 DEG C./7 mm., N/ha25/he/taD/te 1.494, D/ha25/he/ta25/te 1.41.
