Class 91 [Also in Group VI] A germicidal soap composition which is substantially alkali-free contains, in addition to soap, (a) a minor proportion of a thiuram disulphide of the formula Z 1 NC(S)SSC(S)NZ 2 where Z 1 and Z 2 each are either two separate monovalent saturated or unsaturated alkyl groups each having desirably one to four, and preferably one or two, carbon atoms, or else a single bivalent cycloaliphaticradical, and (b) a stabilizing compound for the thiuram disulphide such as a percompound or a quadrivalent tin or lead compound. These stabilizers are usually present in amounts of 0.05-5.0 per cent ormore but preferably 0.05-2.0 per cent. Thethiuram disulphide is desirably present to an extent of 0.1-5.0, preferably 0.2-2.0 per cent, and a preferred compound is N-tetramethyl thiuram disulphide. Suitable percompounds are those which yield hydrogen. peroxide in alkaline solution, such as sodium, pyrophosphate peroxide, sodium persulphate, sodium perborate and sodium percarbonate; lauroyl peroxide is also suitable. Stannic chloride is preferred as the source of quadrivalent tin, but other stannic salts, basic stannic salts and ortho- and meta-stannic acids and their salts may also be used. If per-compounds are used it is necessary to add an alkali-neutralizing agent to the composition, such as sodium bicarbonate or an inorganic or organic acid such as boric acid or a long- or short-chain aliphatic acid, particularly the free acid from which the soap is formed. In addition synthetic anionic ornon-ionic detergents, a number of which are specified, may be present, as may such. other germicides as the 2, 2<SP>1</SP>-dihydroxy halongenated diphenylmethanes.
