Abstract

Germicidal detergent compositions contain soap or an anionic or non-ionic soapless detergent, or a mixture of any of these, and a minor proportion of a thiuram sulphide of the formula XNC(S)Sn(S)CNX, in which n is 2-4 and each X denotes two aliphatic radicals, which may be straight- or branched-chain and saturated or unsaturated, or a bivalent cycloaliphatic radical which forms, with the adjacent nitrogen atom, a heterocyclic ring, e.g. a piperidine ring. Typical thiuram sulphides are tetramethyl, tetraethyl and tetrabutylene thiuram di-sulphides, tetramethyl thiuram tetrasulphide and dicyclopentamethylene thiuram disulphide; others are also specified. The soap may be a rosin soap or a soap of a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid of 8-26 carbon atoms, tridecoic and cerotic acids being among those specified. Suitable anionic soapless detergents are alkyl sulphates, alkylaryl sulphonates, sulphated condensation products of alkylphenols with ethylene oxide, e.g. the ammonium salt of a sulphated condensation product of nonylphenol with ethyllene oxide, fatty acid taurides and fatty acid esters of isethionic acid. Suitable nonionic detergents are polyethylene glycol or polypropylene glycol esters of fatty acids, polyethylene glycol ethers of alkylphenols and fatty acid esters of the condensation products of sorbitan with ethylene oxide. The compositions may include also other germicides, e.g. a halogenated 2, 21 - dihydroxydiphenylmethane, as well as builders, fillers and like additives such as phosphates, carbonates, silicates, sodium chloride, glycerine, fatty acid diethanolamides, diethylene glycol, triethanolamine, sodium cellulose sulphate and diethylene triamine. The proportion of thiuram sulphide may be 0.1-5 per cent, preferably 0.2-2 per cent, and methods of incorporating the sulphide into the compositions are indicated; for this purpose the sulphide may be taken as such or in solution in a solvent such as alcohol, acetone or benzene. The compositions may be in liquid or solid form, e.g. as cakes or powders. Examples of suitable compositions are given.ALSO:Germicidal detergent compositions contain soap or an anionic or non-ionic soapless detergent, or a mixture of any of these, and a minor proportion of a thiuram sulphide of the formula XNC(S) Sn (S) CNX, in which n is 2-4 and each X denotes two aliphatic radicals, which may be straight or branched chain and saturated or unsaturated, or a divalent cycloaliphatic radical which forms, with the adjacent nitrogent atom, a heterocyclic ring, e.g. a piperidine ring.
