Abstract

Detergent compositions which may be in the form of shampoos or dishwashing formulations contain as an essential ingredient amine oxides of the formula <FORM:1066763/C4-C5/1> wherein A represents C8-18 alkyl or alkenyl, R represents A, C1-4 alkyl or the group -CqH2qOH, and q is 2 or 3, with or without an anionic or non-ionic surface acting agent, e.g. alkyl-aryl sulphonates, alkyl sulphates or alkyl or alkylphenyl polyether sulphates. Other ingredients which may be present are alkylolamides, sodium tripolyphosphate, tetrapotassium pyrophosphate, soda ash, sodium metasilicate, aminopolycarboxylate-type sequestering agents, ethanol, isopropanol and/or water. The alkyl sulphates may be in the form of alkali metal or alkylolamine salts, and the sulphonates may be in the form of sodium, ammonium or alkanolamine salts.ALSO:The invention comprises novel amine oxides of the formula <FORM:1066763/C2/1> wherein A represents C8- 18 alkyl or alkenyl, R represents A, C1- 4 alkyl or the group -CqH2q-OH, and q is 3, and the preparation of these and other amine oxides of the above formula wherein q is 2 by (1) reacting a monosulphate ester of the formula AOSO3M (wherein M is a cation) with an alkylolamine of the formula R1NHCqH2qOH (wherein R1 represents hydrogen, a C1- 4 alkyl group or the group -CqH2qOH) in the presence of a solvolytic medium and a base at a temperature of at least 100 DEG C., and (2) reacting the resulting intermediate tertiary amine with a peroxidizing agent.
