Abstract

568,538. Carbon black. WINGFOOT CORPORATION. May 13, 1943, No. 7646. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1942. [Class 90] The properties of impingement carbon black are modified by passing the granular or pellatized black by gravity flow through a furnace in which the material is heated in a non- oxidising atmosphere to remove adsorbed gases and then cooling the black in a non-oxidising atmosphere. The heating step may be conducted at a temperature of 600-1000‹ C., and the cooling to a temperature of 300‹ C. According to one modification (Fig. 2), the carbon black, charged into an upper portion 7, passes downwardly by gravity through a number of parallel pipes through a heating zone 8 and a cooling zone 9. Hot gases pass round the pipes in the heating zone and the cooling zone 9 comprises two flues 10 and 11 through which cool air and water respectively are passed. If necessary, hammering or jarring devices may be provided to prevent clogging. The product may be used as a filler in compounding rubber.
