Abstract

A composition for the manufacture of moulded products is prepared by heating coal or a mixture composed predominantly of coal sufficiently rapidly to cause intumescence to a temperature between the onset and completion of intumescence, i.e., about 500 DEG C., in such a manner as to avoid burning or causing the swelling number to fall below 2 or impairing the agglutinating properties, the residue being then cooled and powdered. The powdered residue is moulded and heated above 550 DEG C., and preferably above 700 DEG C., so as to avoid burning and intumescence. The coal, which preferably has a swelling-number of 9 is powdered and moulded, and the moulded article is placed in a furnace through which a stream of nitrogen is passed. The temperature is raised to 500 DEG C. in 25 minutes and maintained at 505-510 DEG C. for 20 minutes. After cooling to 200 DEG C., the residue is powdered, moulded to the desired shape, packed with a powdered high-volatile non-coking coal, heated to 850 DEG C., at a temperature increase of 2C DEG . per minute and then cooled in an atmosphere of nitrogen.
