Abstract

Cured polymeric, particularly elastomeric, siloxane scrap is reclaimed by heating at 200-350 DEG C. in an oxygen-free atmosphere in the presence of steam. Superheated steam is preferable since the pressure may then be atmospheric. The scrap should be in a divided condition to provide ready access for the steam and the treatment is continued until the scrap has been softened to the desired extent, e.g. from 15 minutes to 2 hours. The reclaimed scrap may be milled with fresh uncured material and moulded into articles. Several examples are given of the reclaiming of various cured commercial siloxane rubbers using an atmosphere of superheated steam at atmospheric pressure and temperatures ranging from 200 to 302 DEG C. for 15 or 30 minutes. The products were compounded with various quantities of fresh uncured material, moulded and used. The mechanical properties of the products are compared with those of products from 100 per cent. fresh material.
