Abstract

Vulcanized scrap rubber as crumb &c. is heated to over 120 DEG C but below the temperature of which appreciable destruction of the rubber occurs, and is then cooled rapidly, e.g. to 100 DEG C., or a little lower, as by adding water, or by air blast, and worked, e.g. in a Werner-Pfleiderer mixer to cause it to cohere. The rapid cooling may be repeated with intermediate raising of the temperature, and coherence may also be aided by adding, e.g. a resin, preferably melting above 70 DEG C., such as coumarone-indene resin, or colophony. Fillers &c. may be added and the product used for moulding, spinning, extruding, dipping, mixing with raw rubber, cloth coating, or impregnating.
