Abstract

568,254. Thrust bearings. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). Feb. 25, 1944, No. 3563. [Class 12 (i)] A self-aligned thrust bearing 23 for a shaft end comprises a thrust-plate structure 29, 30, 34 engaging a collar 27 on the shaft 14 and having an element 45 beyond the shaft end engaged at a point near the shaft axis by a member 39 located between the shaft and the element 45 and carried by a support 24 for the thrust-plate structure. Plate 24 is secured to the casing 25 and carries bolts 37 for the member 39 which has a conical part 41 engaging the element 45, which is carried by bolts 40 mounted on plate 29. This plate carries a second plate 30 with a lining 31, the structure being completed by a third plate 34 having a lining 35. To facilitate inspection and relining, plate 30 is made in two halves. Plate 24 carries a cylinder 38 against which member 39 is secured. The amount of wear of the lining 31 is measured by a contact pin 50 on an arm 51 carried by a shaft 52 rotatable in a bearing 53 formed in thrust plate 34. Shaft 52 carries an arm 55 having a pin 56 engaged by a fork 57 on a shaft 58 provided with a handle 60 and a pointer traversing a scale, shaft 58 being biassed by a spring 62 to bring the pin 50 into engagement with lining 39. The movement of the pointer to the centre of the scale should indicate the normal clearance between plate 34 and collar 27 whilst movement beyond the centre indicates the wear on lining 31.
