Abstract

567,499. Carding engines. BRITISH COTTON INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, and LOCKE, J. April 23, 1943, No. 6557. [Class 120 (i)] In order to improve the cleaning action of the taker-in of a carding engine, the usual mote knives are dispensed with and a control member 6, Fig. 1, is adjustably secured to the dish plate 1 and, with the adjacent surface of the taker-in 4 and the cut-away face 5 of the dishplate, partially encloses the space below a striking face 3 of the plate so that dirt particles struck off by the teeth of the taker-in in the vicinity of the face 3 are reflected back by the surface 7 of the member 6 on to the teeth and by them struck through the gap 8 into the dirt box. The upper surface of the member 6 which faces the oncoming stream of material from the striking face 3 is disposed at an acute angle to the taker-in so as to form a converging wedge thereto, and the second striking surface 7 is at an obtuse angle to the striking face 3. A collecting member 9 with slots 9<6> arranged arc-wise of the member is disposed below the taker-in and located so as to leave a large free arc of the taker-in surface and is independently adjustable at its ends to vary its setting from the taker-in and the amount of fibre that is collected on its surface. The member 9 is formed with side plates 9<1>, a nose-piece 9<2>, a bar 9<3> spaced from the turned-down portion 9<5> of the curved slotted part 9<4> and an upper edge connected with the undercasing of the cylinder 10. The member 6 may be directly fixed to the undersurface of the plate 1 and packing-pieces may be disposed between the member and plate to vary the disposition of the latter ; the upper surface of the member may be shaped to enlarge the space below the face 5. The lower end of the member 9 may be adjustably secured to the sides of the machine by adjustable brackets 11, Fig. 3, having pins 13 engaging holes in the sides 9<1> with the sides closely adjacent the sides of the machine ; the upper end of the member 9 may engage abutments 15, 16 or an extension 14 of the cylinder undercasing.
