616,244. Preparing fibres for spinning. BRITISH COTTON INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, and OWEN, T. W. May 13, 1946, No. 19274/48. Divided out of 616,175. [Class 120(i)] In a machine for opening and cleaning fibrous materials such as cotton, comprising a casing divided by an apertured partition into a hopper 1 and a beater compartment, and an inclined spiked lattice 3 for feeding the material to a beater 7 working against dirt bars 7<SP>3</SP>, the upper wall 11 of the beater compartment is shaped without a stripper edge for the beater 7 and is spaced away from the beater at all points a distance at least equal to the radius of the beater 7, thus providing a space 9 into which some of the material may be projected by the beater 7 so as to return to the beater for further treatment. As shown, beater 7 has serrated flaps 7' and spikes 7<SP>2</SP>, and a further beater 8 is provided, working against dirt bars 8<SP>2</SP>. After beating, material is fed forward by a suction cage 10. A partition 13 with adjustable end-piece 13' screens the evener roller 4 from space 9. The cover 11 is provided with an adjustable end piece 11<SP>2</SP> and may be shaped at the upper part to accommodate a high-speed suction cage providing suction with the space 9.
