Abstract
614,568. Preparing fibres for spinning. LISTER & SONS, Ltd., H., and CROWTHER, L. July 12, 1946, No. 20904. [Class 120(i)] A fibre web is removed from a smoothfaced roller in preparatory spinning operations wherein the web is carried freely by the roller, by the use of a doffing roller rotated at a surface speed not greater than, and in the opposite direction to, that of the smooth roller in close proximity thereto and provided with wire teeth into which the web is pressed freely by the smooth roller to be carried round by the doffing roller to a stripping point. As shown, the invention is applied to the burr-crushing apparatus of Specification 444,043. A thinly spread out web 1 produced on a carding engine is passed between crushing rollers 2, 3 and remains in contact with the lower roller 3 until it is removed therefrom by a doffer roller 4 covered with card clothing the points of which are inclined rearwardly relative to their direction of motion. Doffer 4 rotates with a lower surface speed than roller 3 so that the web is condensed or thickened to produce a stronger sliver when it is stripped from the doffer by a fly comb 20, or alternatively by a small card-covered roller or by rotating beater blades, and delivered to a conveyer. The web 1 is conveyed from the carding engine to the crushing rollers by a pair of small conveyer rollers 34, 35 covered with card clothing of the normal density of carding machine stripper rollers, the wire points being inclined rearwardly relative to their direction of motion. Rollers 34 and 35 are set almost touching each other so as to clean each other and rotate with a slightly lower surface speed than roller 3. Rollers 34, 35 are adjustably mounted on supporting rods 36, and roller 4 and fly comb 20 are similarly mounted on supporting rods 17. The fly comb shaft is mounted in needle bearings 22, the oscillating mechanism being belt driven from a main pulley on the shaft 6 of roller 3, and rollers 4, 34 and 35 are driven by change-gearing from shaft 6.
