Abstract

388,858. Felting fibrous materials. FORBES, A., 57, Bayham Place, London. Nov. 3, 1931, No. 30380. [Class 140.] A machine for felting and sizing fibrous material for use as padding &c. comprises disintegrating or winnowing mechanism, a perforated cylinder or the like upon which the fibrous material is deposited by suction to form a fleece or band, and mechanism for incorporating in the fleece an adhesive in dry powdered form which is subsequently moistened. Fibrous material, e.g. cotton fibre, is introduced into the casing 1, containing a rotating beater 2, a feed regulator belt 3, and a conveyer belt 6 comprising spiked slats which, acting in conjunction with a spiked feed roller 11, feeds forward a band of material. A beater 13 picks up some of the material and throws it between a roller 14 and the top of the casing on to a belt 18 which carries it to a feed roller 22 partly surrounded by a curved comb 23. The material is drawn through the comb by a rotating brush 24 and delivered to a rotating perforated drum 25, within which is a fixed cylinder 26 with a slot 27. A slight degree of vacuum is maintained in the cylinder 26 by means of a fan. The bat of material on the drum 25 passes under a roller 29 and is delivered on to a belt 30 of wire gauze, on which it passes under a hopper delivering powdered adhesive material, e.g. powdered size, a distributer 33 comprising a reciprocating bar provided with blades, and steam supply devices 34, 35 comprising pipes with jets. The material impregnated on its upper surface with the moistened adhesive then passes through a drying chamber 39 and between rollers 40.
