828,455. Opening and blending fibres. T. M. M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. Dec. 5, 1957 [Dec. 7, 1956], No. 37422/56. Classes 120(1) and 120(3) Fibre is fed by a conveyer A to second conveyer C where it accumulates in a chamber E to a level controlled by a shutter F. An inclined spiked lattice G, served by a stripper comb R and stripper brush J, delivers fibre from chamber E into a chamber H in which it is deposited on a conveyer K as a sheet which is presented by a roller and pedal feed mechanism M to a rotary cylinder N closely covered with spikes or teeth. Instead of conveyer K, a gravity feed trunk, adapted to preserve a constant volume of material, may receive fibre from lattice G and feed the mechanism M through an outlet at the base. Fibre tufts are removed from cylinder N by a stripper brush P and conveyed into a pneumatic outlet duct Q. Cylinder N may consist of a resin-bonded paper tube in the surface of which are fixed spikes or pins, two rows of which may be reversed so as to clear the stripping brush P. Fibres may be blended by feeding different ingredients, in the desired proportions, side by side or in superposed layers on to conveyer A. Alternatively, a battery of openers as described, disposed in parallel and each fedwith one or more ingredients, may deliver into a common outlet duct Q; the desired proportions of mix may be achieved by adjusting the relative rates of delivery of the mechanisms M of the respective machines.
