838,793. Opening and mixing fibres. DEUTSCHER SPINNEREIMASCHINENBAU INGOLSTADT NIEDERLASSUNG DER SCHUBERT & SALZER MASCHINENFABRIK A.G. Jan. 1, 1958 [Feb. 26, 1957], No. 42/58. Classes 120(1) and 120(3) In a bale breaker wherein a bale rests on a grate between whose bars spikes or saw teeth on a rotary drum or a spiked lattice engage the bale, the bale is automatically fed to the grate under the influence of gravity. In one embodiment. Fig. 2, bales 1, 1<SP>1</SP> rest in inclined shoot 2 on grate bars 3 curved to conform with the periphery of a drum 4 the spikes 4<SP>1</SP> of which engage the bottom of a bale between bars 3. Tufts of fibre detached by spikes 4<SP>1</SP> are stripped by a roller 5 on to an endless conveyer belt 6 or into a pneumatic conveyer pipe. A feeler lever 20 closes contacts to give a visible or audible warning when a fresh bale needs to be inserted in the shoot' Shoot 2 may be replaced by a vertical feed shaft. Some or all of bars 3 may be reciprocated vertically by cam means, or the drum may be vertically reciprocated. Alternatively, spikes 3 may be given an oscillating motion; for this purpose they may be fixed to bars 40, Fig. 3, rotatably mounted on the periphery of drum 4 and having cranked ends 41 engaging a fixed cam slot 10. In another embodiment, drum 3 is replaced by an endless spiked lattice co-operating with straight grate bars. For mixing fibre, Fig. 8, a number of bale breakers 1 may deliver to openers 18 whence the material passes through distributers 19 to cleaners and scutchers. Further mixing may be provided at the breaker by placing side by side on the shoot thick layers from several bales.
