Abstract
937,262. Opening bales of and blending fibres. CROMPTON & KNOWLES CORPORATION. Feb. 10, 1961 [Feb. 10, 1960], No. 5065/61. Classes 120 (1) and 120 (3). Fibres are torn in tufts from bales and blended by arranging for a plurality of bales to be reciprocated over a row of tables associated with rotary toothed members that tear the tufts from the lower faces of the bales and deposit them on a conveyer in such manner that layers of tufts from different bales accumulate on the conveyer. Bales 3 of fibres that are to be blended are placed on rows 16 of tables 15, each row 16 being in line with a feeder 1 which may be a hopper feeder provided with a weigh pan or may be a feeder that includes a series of beater rolls disposed on an inclined housing member shaped to conform to the rolls. Between each table 15 a slotted sheet forms a bridge 30 and under the bridge is arranged a rotary plucker member carrying pins 32 that remove tufts of fibres from the bales 3 as the latter are reciprocated over the tables. Brushes 60 co-operate with the plucker members to sweep the fibre tufts on to a conveyer 2 that supplies the feeder 1. Instead of the brushes 60, fibres may be removed from the pins 32 by air blasts. Each feeder 1 will have presented to it a web of fibres consisting of layers of tufts taken from each of the bales 3. When each of the feeders 1 has weighed a predetermined amount of the commingled fibres, the scale pans of the several feeders are opened and the fibres discharged on to a conveyer 8 for transport to a cleaning and blending machine 9, the discharges taking place either simultaneously or consecutively. U.S.A. Specification 2,412,508 is referred to.
