Abstract

919,636. Opening and blending fibres. T.M.M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. Sept. 30, 1960 [Oct. 2, 1959], No. 33551/59. Class 120 (3). A method of blending a plurality of textile fibrous materials comprises the steps of weighing batches of the separate ingredients to predetermined weights and depositing these batches upon a travelling conveyer 15 the speed of which is so related to the rate of deposition of the batches that a substantially uniform thickness of each ingredient is delivered continuously by the conveyer 15. Four bale openers 11 . . . 14, Fig. 1, having automatic weighing devices 16 . . . 19 provided with staggered shoots 20 . . . 23 to deliver predetermined weights of material are arranged along a lattic conveyer 15. The batches are fed to an opening machine 24 of the kind described in Specification 828,455 and the opened and partially mixed material is fed to a duct 25. The duct 25 is connected to a hopper feeder 26 which supplies blended and opened material to a scutcher 27. The apparatus is combined with an inclined multiple beater opener 28, a vertical twin cylinder opener 29 and a hopper feeder 30. The conveyer 15 is arranged to deliver material to be blended to the opening machine 24 and also to deliver fibrous material in normal processing to the opener 28. A duct 31 is joined at 32 with the duct 35 and a change-over closure flap (not shown) is provided at the junction 32. By dispensing with the shoots 20 . . . 23 the feed positions may be made to lie in the same line along the conveyer length to form superposed batches. In a modification, Fig. 2, weighing units 37 . . . 40 mounted on stands 41 . . . 44 and comprising pans 45 . . . 48 which are carried by supports 49 . . . 52 movable on horizontal guides across the width of the conveyer 15, are provided. If two different materials are to be blended one material is fed to the openers 11, 13 or 33, 35 and the other to the openers 12, 14 or 34, 36.
