Abstract

731,380. Yarns of fibres bonded by adhesive. ABERFOYLE MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 27, 1952 [Sept. 11, 1951], No. 21535/52. Class 120(3). Fibrous strips suitable for twisting into yarns, are produced by applying fibres to strips or a sheet of adhesive, setting the adhesive, removing the excess fibres and in the case of the sheet cutting it into strips. In one form, strips of adhesive are laid on a rotating drum 15 from nozzles 17 associated with a receptacle 18 provided with a heating coil 19. Continuous filaments of nylon or the like may be embedded in the adhesive strips. Fibres from a hopper 21 are fed onto the drum 15 by feed rollers 22 and are pressed into the adhesive by a rubber or felt covered roller 23. Setting of the adhesive is then carried out by means of a device 25 and excess fibres are brushed off and carried away by a suction conduit 28. The strands of fibres taken from the drum 15 may then be twisted by conventional means. Softening of the adhesive before twisting may be effected by a device 34. Drafting may be carried out by means of rollers 29. In another embodiment, the drum 15 rotates in a bath of adhesive and a mat of fibres the full width of the drum is pressed upon the adhesive taken up by the drum. After setting the adhesive and removing excess fibres, the mat of fibres is cut into strips. Cotton, flax, silk, wool, rayon or synthetic fibres may be used. Suitable adhesives are solutions of starch, glue, viscose gums, resins and alginates, gelatine and casein that can be made insoluble in water by treatment with formaldehyde, rubber latex or synthetic rubbers soluble in benzene, thermoplastic materials, such as cellulose acetate, thermosetting materials, such as urea formaldehyde and adhesives soluble in alcohol. After the fibrous strips have been formed, the adhesive may be removed. Specification 731,381 is referred to
