Abstract
606,281. Openers and cleaners for fibrous material. BRITISH COTTON INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, FREEMAN, S. M., and LINNERT, A. Dec. 4, 1945, No. 32715. [Class 120(i)] In an opening and cleaning machine for fibrous materials, of the kind comprising a high-speed rotary drum-like saw-toothed beater 4, means for feeding the fibrous material to the beater, a collecting chamber including upper and lower covers 5, 8 partially embracing the beater and partially closing air entry to said chamber before and after the feed, and a suction cage or cages 6, 6' at the other end of the chamber for receiving the fibrous material, cover 8 is sufficiently close to the beater, and cover 5 so spaced away from the beater, that the suction cage or cages can produce a condition of less than atmospheric pressure in the chamber including a zone extending against cover 5 to the region of feed so as to provide a return space to permit air carried around by the beater and checked at the feed point to return within the chamber to the suction cage or cages. As shown, raw cotton is fed from a travelling lattice 1 through compression rollers 2, a tandem pedal feed 3, having a trash-disposal member, of the type described in Specification 567,499, and feed rollers 3<SP>1</SP> to beater 4. A portion 5<SP>1</SP> of cover 5 is vertically adjustable to vary the air inlet. Lateral movement of air above the beater is restricted by longitudinal vanes 7 of wedge-shaped section. An adjustable portion 8<SP>1</SP> of cover 8 contacts suction cage 6<SP>1</SP> through a leather flap 8<SP>2</SP>; another portion 8<SP>5</SP> formed with a leading edge 8<SP>6</SP> is adjustable radially or circumferentially of the beater, a downwardly extending sheet 8<SP>10</SP> forming one wall of a dust chamber and contacting the floor thereof through a leather flap.
