Abstract

778,417. Opening and separating textile fibres. BRITISH COTTON INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Dec. 7, 1955 [Dec. 7, 1954], No. 35324/54. Classes 120 (1) and 120 (3). In preparing cotton waste for spinning or breaking up rags and reclaimed woollen materials by subjecting the material to a treatment stage in which, or to a number of successive stages in at least one of which, part of the material is broken up and opened, the material is divided into two parts viz. one part containing most of the opened material and the other containing the remaining relatively compacted material, the former being passed on for further processing or to the next successive stage and the latter being fed again to the same or a preceding stage e.g. the material may be returned to a " devil ". In the machine illustrated, material fed by a conveyer 11 or 11a through feed rollers 12, 13, 14 or 12a, 13a, 14a is struck down by spikes on a cylinder 15 or 15a, heavy foreign matter is removed by a deflector 19 or 19a, and the division into two parts effected by a separating edge 20 or a stripping edge 22: opened material is collected and removed by a suction cage 18 or withdrawn by an air stream through a ducting 21a and compacted material is withdrawn through a conduit 21 or collected and removed by suction cages 18a, 18b. The divergence between the covers 17 and 16a and the surfaces of the cylinders 15 and 15a encourage formation of low air pressure regions which assist in the removal of opened material.
