Abstract
893,564. Cleaning fibres. T.M.M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. May 12, 1960 [May 15, 1959], No. 16737/59. Class 120(1) Fibres and foreign matter are aerodynamically separated by passing them in an air stream through a duct, accelerating the air stream, and diverting it about the periphery of a rotating body. Fibrous material fed by a roller 11 receives a preliminary opening by a heater cylinder 12 that may have saw-toothed clotting. The upper part of the cylinder 12 is enclosed by a substantially airtight casing 15 and below the cylinder is a duct 13 in which a rotor 14 is mounted which has a peripheral speed in excess of the average air velocity in the duct, preferably in the speed ratios of 4:1 to 6:1. Where the material-laden air stream comes under the influence of the rotor 14 its velocity is increased and direction suddenly changed, whereupon trash is ejected through an aperture 17 while fibres pass down a trunk 19 to a cage condenser 20. In other embodiments, more than one rotor may be used and rotors may have plain, corrugated, rough or saw-tooth covered surfaces. An alternative fibre feed arrangement has means discharging an airstream downwardly between roller 11 and cylinder 12.
