[Class 120 (i)] A machine for opening and cleaning cotton or like material comprises a spiked or saw toothed beater f, Fig. 1, which strikes the material from feed mechanism c, c<1> into a stream of air entering by an inlet duct h having an upper boundary wall terminating at a point near the place of entry of the material and a lower boundary wall n joining the wall p of a settling chamber q, the settling chamber having an end wall r concave or shaped in crosssection to the interior of the settling chamber to provide a knee s below the beater surface and rearward of its most forward point and continued forward of the knee at t to produce a gradually converging channel. The knee s and lower part of the wall r are slightly adjustable and the upper wall merges into a cross rail d adjacent the beater f so as to ensure an air stream directed downwards and forwards, if desired a plate m, Fig. 2, or m<x>, Fig. 3, being adjustably secured below the cross rail d. The feed rollers c, c<1> are of small diameter and the roller c rests in cup bearings on a cross rail. The upper roller c<1> is weighted by a large roller e. A shaped member f<1> is fitted below the beater while a cross-bar v having a stripping edge u and secured to an adjustable deflecting plate w, Fig. 5, is also provided, the parts t, w directing the material to the cages x, x<1>. The base of the settling chamber q is formed by a trash lattice y having a leather flap r' and a driven roller z with a leather flap p<1> to prevent air leakage.
