Abstract

879,699. Preparing fibre for spinning. BRITISH COTTON INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. March 21, 1960 [Feb. 4, 1959], No. 3885/59. Class 120(1) A machine for opening, cleaning and feeding fibre comprises a rotary beater, a chamber through which fibre opened and cleaned by the beater action passes to one or more suction cages, a hopper compartment which receives fibre from the cage(s), and means for compacting or compressing the fibre as it moves downwardly through the compartment to regulate the feed of fibre therefrom. In a machine comprising an opening and cleaning section A, similar to that described in Specification 606,281, and a feeding section B, fibre which may have been partly opened is delivered by a lattice 11, through compression rollers 12, 13, to a pedal feed 14 and a toothed, rotary beater 15. Covers 16 and 18 having adjustable portions 16a, 18a form a chamber through which fibre is conveyed pneumatically to a suction cage 17 the periphery of which, between the edge of cover 18 and a sealing roller 19, is exhausted through a conduit 17a. Fibre stripped from the cage by a roller 20 passes into a hopper 22 (one wall 22c of which has an adjustably hinged portion), from. which it is moved by a feed roller 21 to an. endless conveyer 24. The drive to the conveyer also transmits through a chain 32, wheel 31, cranks, as at 29. arms, as at 28 and a transverse bar 27 to cause a plate 23 extending across the. width of the hopper to. reciprocate therein, at. a speed adjusted according to the rate of feed of fibre from the machine, thereby compressing, (against roller 21) and regulating the. fibre. The. speed ratio between the conveyer and crank drives may be maintained over a given range of speeds or the relative speeds may be varied. The feed of fibre to the beater may be temporarily suspended if the fibre in the hopper reaches a predetermined high level e.g. limit switches, Fig. 3 (not shown) in the hopper may interrupt the drive of lattice 11.
