Abstract
565,758. Landing gear forks for aircraft. RUBERY, OWEN, & CO., Ltd., OWEN, E. W. B., and BUCKLEY, R. O. April 2, 1943, Nos. 5293 and 9401. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXII] Forks for the landing wheels or caterpillar tracks of aeroplanes are made of two sheetmetal pressings or stampings welded together. The retractable fork for a port wheel shown in Figs. 1, 2, comprises two pressings 22, 23 welded along the line 24. Bushes 21 for a retraction pivotal connection and tubes 28, 33 for receiving the casings of the oleo legs are welded into the pressings, the tubes 28 being each held by two spaced straps 29 welded to the pressing 22. Brackets 35 for attachment to a retracting jack are welded to the pressing 22. Electric arc, gas or flash-welding may be employed, the weld zone being heat treated, in the case of flash-welding, to develop the physical properties of the parent metal. The tail-wheel fork shown in Fig.6, formed of pressings 22a, 23a, is provided in addition to the pivot bushes 21a with bushes 37 for the wheel axle. Plates 42 welded to the bridge part of the fork carry bushes 43 for attachment of a retracting oleo-leg or jack and plates 44 welded to the limbs carry towing pins 45. Clips 46 welded to the limbs serve for holding the fork when machining and they may be drilled for pins that pass also transversely through the wheel axle to locate it.
