Abstract
565,753. Machinery guards. BERKEL & PARNALL'S SLICING MACHINE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., and THOMAS, H. March 23, 1943, No. 4705. [Class 80 (iv)] [Also in Group I] The knife-openings of reciprocating multiknife slicing machines are masked except when slicing is in progress. Pivoted fingers 22 cover the opening in front of the knives 15, 16 in the frame 11 when the loaf &c. L is being placed in position. By a lost-motion linkage connection 26 with the loaf-holder 12 and releasing a looking hook 35, the fingers are caused to withdraw between the blades when the slicing movement is initiated. In a modification, Fig. 4, the guard consists of an arcuate metal sheet 50 mounted on arms 51 actuated by a rack-and-pinion connection 52, 53 from the holder 12. In another form in which the loaf is pushed through an opening against vertical knives, a guard is locked across the opening except when movement of the pusher grips a cable to push aside a stop holding the guard. In a fourth form, the guard is mounted in a pivoted plate which is released and swings the guard out of the way when the slicing mechanism handle is operated. Specification 551,191 is referred to.
