Abstract

581,294. Wire-cutters. CADDY, S. C. Aug. 28, 1944, No. 16255. [Class 61 (ii)] Wire-cutters comprise a plate 1, Fig. 1, having a mouth-like opening 2 provided with an extension 3 to which an operating lever 4 is attached and a blade 5, Fig. 2, spaced from the plate 1 and rigidly attached to it having a cutting edge 6 which is coincident with the upper edge of the opening 2 in the plate 1. In the gap between the plate 1 and the blade 5 operates a second blade 8, Fig. 3, pivotally connected to the blade 5 by a bolt 9 passing through both blades and the plate. Blade 8 has a mouth 10 coincident with the opening 2 and is provided with an extension 12 to which a lever 13 is attached. The lower edge of the mouth 10 is formed with a cutting edge 11 which co-operates with the cutting edge 6 on the blade 5. When the levers are separated, the cutting edge 6 and the upper edges of the mouths 10 and 2 form an abutment for the wire being cut, and as the blade 8 moves upwardly during the cutting operation, the wire is forced to bend and fracture before the completion of the cut. In order that the wire may be held both during and after the cutting operation, the plate 1 is provided with a member 16 pivoted on the bolt 9. The edge 18 of this member lies level with the lower edge of the mouth 2 when the levers are open. Around the bolt 9 is a spring 19, one of its ends being secured to the member 16 and the other end held in a slot formed in the bolt. The spring serves to move the edge 18 across the opening 2, but this movement is restrained by a projection 21 carried by the member which engages a pin 22 secured to the blade 8 and moving in an arcuate slot 23 in the plate 1.
