In an edge trimmer of the guillotine type, a work clamp is normally biased to the clamping position and the pivoted cutter blade has a projection near the pivotal axis thereof which, near to the completion of the upward stroke of the cutter blade, operates a clamp-actuating member to cause the work clamp to be moved to an inoperative position. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a work-clamping bar 7 is located above a fixed blade 3 and is supported at its ends on rods 5 extending upwardly from the ends of a bar 6 which is biased to a lowered position, corresponding to the clamping position of the bar 7, by means of springs 10. The movable cutter blade 11 is pivoted at 13 and is formed with a tail 14 having a cam edge 15 which, when the cutter blade 11 is raised, depresses the end 16 of a pivoted lever 17 thereby raising the bar 6 and moving the clamping bar 7 to its inoperative position. The upward movement of the pivoted blade is limited by the engagement of a shoulder 22 on the tail 14 with a stop bar 21. The pivot 13 may be provided with a torsion spring when tends to move the blade 11 towards its raised position. In a modification, Fig. 3, the clamping bar 7 is carried by a pivotally-mounted rod 23. One end of the rod carries a spring-influenced bellcrank lever 25 one arm 26 of which is depressed by a tail 14, when the pivoted blade 11 is raised, so as to move the bar 7 to its inoperative. position.
