A flying shear comprises a slider 12, carrying a cutting bush 13, which is operated by a crank and connecting rod 28, and a knife 29 guided on the slider to co-operate with the bush, the knife being directly moved by a transmission element coupled to the connecting rod. In the embodiment shown this element is an arm 27 from the little end of the connecting rod which has an extension 28a carrying the knife 29. The knife position may be adjusted by screw 30 and the stroke of the slider is adjusted by altering the throw of the crank by means of a screw (23), Fig. 2 (not shown). In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, the slider 12 is directly connected to the little end of the connecting rod and the knife 35 is carried in a slide 34 operated by the end 36 of the connecting rod 17. In Fig. 5, the slider is moved by the knife 42 in its guide on slider 41, the knife being secured to the connecting rod 17 at a point intermediate its big end and little end 45, the little end being joined by a link 46 to a fixed pivot 47. The position of the pivot 47 may be adjusted or it may follow an independent path. The position of the blades of the knives of the shears may be adjusted so that cutting takes place at the correct time in relation to the speed of the wire or strip material passing through the bush 13.
