565,437. Valves. DAVISON, G. A. June 15, 1943, No. 9556. [Class 7 (vi)] [Also in Group XXIX] In a retaining device for a valve spring &c. comprising a collar 2 adapted to pass over the valve stem &c. and slotted diametrically to receive a pair of oppositely disposed pawllike cotters 5 which are pivotally mounted in the slot and have their free ends 5a shaped to engage an abutment, which may be a groove 1a of saw-tooth section in the stem, near the end of the stem, the valve spring 3 tending to force the cotters 5 into engagement with the abutment 1a after the spring has been compressed by sliding the collar past the abutment, lever springs 6 with their fixed ends pivotally mounted in the collar 2 and their -free ends engaging in grooves in the cotters press the latter towards the stem and may be turned aside when the cotters are to be disengaged. To prevent the cotters from digging into the stem, flats 5b in the cotters engage recesses in the collar, downward projections on the cotters engage the walls of the slot or pins arranged parallel to the pivots 4 of the cotters prevent them from turning too far.
