Abstract

564,814. Open fireplaces. C.U.R.A. PATENTS, Ltd., HALES, J. S., MURPHY, E., and MACDONALD, L. Feb. 8, 1943, No. 2090. [Class 126] In an open fireplace in which the combustion air supplied to the cavity 5 below the grate is derived wholly from outside the room, the air is admitted at 6 from the space below the floor 2 and the cavity 5 communicates with the interior of the room through an aperture in the hearth fitted with a removable louvred plate 4a and controlled by a damper 9, the latter being hinged at its rear edge 8 so that when moved to reduce the air supply to the grate, the air passing into the room and thence to the chimney is increased and vice versa. The damper 9, in its lowermost position closes an aperture 10 in an inclined frame 11 and its uppermost position bears against the underside of the plate 4a and closes the openings therein. The damper is operated by a knob 12 on a rotatable spindle 13 carrying a lug 15 on which bears a helical ramp 16 secured to the underside of the damper. Specification 564,421 is referred to.
