Abstract

564,769. Rotary pumps or motors. STEVENS, A. H. (Manly Corporation). April 7, 1943, No. 5557. [Class 110 (ii)] The radially-sliding vane type of pump or motor has one or more fixed abutments 30 and one or more radially movable abutments 40 connected by pivoted sliding links 50 to secure smooth travel for the vane tips from one abutment to the other and vary the capacity of the working chambers. The inner and outer ends of the vanes 17 are balanced hydraulically, the inner ends being alternately under suction or discharge pressure of the fluid being pumped. Fig. 5 shows one means of coupling abutments 30 and 40 by a link 50 which is pivoted on a pin 59 to the narrowed part 42 of the abutment 40, and has a pin 55 which slides in a slot 35. Each abutment 40 is pressed outwards by a torsion spring 70 and inwards by fluid under pressure, from any suitable source, acting on the upper surface of a piston 99 and forcing downwards a bell-crank lever 81 coupled to a further bell-crank lever 80 by a pin-and-slot connection 87. An adjustable stop 105 is provided. The rotor 15 is freely movable axially on the driving splines 19 of the shaft 18. Cheek plates 26, 27 abut against shoulders cut in an annular surrounding member 20. Sealing arcs 32 are preferably shaped from the rotor 15 to provide a small clearance. The surface of each link 50 preferably approximates to a parabolic shape to provide constant radial acceleration and deceleration of the vanes with the abutment 40 in mid-stroke position. Inlet and outlet ports 28, 29, respectively connected to pipes 68, 69, are provided in the cheeks 26, 27, and slots 62, Fig. 1, show the connections to the undersides of the vanes. Inspection or removal of internal parts may be effected after taking off the head plate 11 and cheek 27. Fig. 12 shows a modified pump with a link 150 having outer cam surfaces bearing on pins 145, 135, and coupled to a spring-held link 160. In a further arrangement, the link is coupled to two links. The abutments 140 may be controlled by any suitable adjusting means through rods 184.
