Abstract

563,633. Non-return valves. DOWTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd., and KILLNER, F. E. Nov. 17, 1942, No. 16279. [Class 135] A non-return valve, particularly adapted for use as an inflating valve for tyres, oleo-pneumatic shock-absorbers and the like, has a valve member adapted to be deformed laterally into sealing engagement with a conical or cylindrical seat by the pressure operating to shut the valve. The Figure shows the invention applied to an inflating valve. The valve inside is screwed into the usual stem 3 by the engagement of a suitable tool with projections 4 to bring a rectangular packing 5 housed in a groove of greater axial length into engagement with a conical shoulder in the stem 3. The valve spindle 11, loosely mounted in the tubular member 2, carries the deformable member 15 housed in a groove of greater axial length 14 immediately beneath a flange 12 on the spindle. As the valve closes the member 15 passes into a cylindrical seat 9 formed on the lower end of the member 2 and when the flange 12 engages stop projections 13, the pressure deforms the member 15 to complete the seal. The valve is urged towards its closed position by a light spring 16 housed in a recess 17 and bearing against an abutment 18 secured to the spindle by crimping the outer end of the spindle. The member 15 when unstressed may be conical, or may be cylindrical with a chamfered leading edge. According to the Provisional Specification, the flange may seat on the bottom of the seat recess and the valve spindle may be extended inwards and fitted with a flexible diaphragm.
