Abstract
1380746 Wells &c GRAY TOOL CO 30 June 1972 [30 July 1971] 30807/72 Heading E1F [Also in Division F2] In a safety-valve suitable for mounting on the tubing head of a well, and comprises a body 10 having a bore 14, a valve 18 movable to open and close the bore, a valve operating piston 146 in a cylinder 172, and a piston rod 130 in the connection between the valve and the piston, fluid leaking around the valve acts on the piston rod in a sense tending to close the valve. The valve is held against a spherical seat formed in the bore by a seat 20 acting as a retainer. One of the seats may be spring biassed towards the valve or have a resilient annular sealing. Grease from a chamber 52 lubricates the valve. The valve is turned through 90 by a shaft 70 having a pinion 68 engaging threads 136 on the piston rod 130. When the valve is closed a surface 138 on the rod engages a seat 170 on a nut 154 to form a metal to metal seal which is not damaged if heat destroys seals 168 in the nut. The piston is moved to open the valve by fluid supplied by a line 177, a spring 182 acting on the piston tending to move the valve to the closed position. Well fluid at excessive pressure leaking about the valve acts through the grease in the chamber 52 on the inner end of the rod to urge the rod to close the valve. A rod 180 at the free end of the rod 130 acts as an indicator of valve position and may be moved axially to move the valve manually. The safety valve shown is for a dual completion well but the invention may be applied to single and multiple completion wells. A christmas tree may be mounted on the body and a master valve may be cast integrally withthe body. In a modification (Figs. 4-6 not shown) the valve is a gate valve having an aperture aligned with the bore in the open position. In the closed position a non-return valve is concentric with the bore and permits supply of fluid to the well.
